Here are their Top 10 reasons they like being homeschooled! Keep in mind this is from the perspective of a 7, 5, and 3 year old....
1) Bee - Because it's boring.
Hmm......Ok, I wasn't exactly expecting that response. I'm not sure she meant she doesn't like being homeschooled because it's boring or that she likes homeschooling because it's boring. Either way, she's bored. Time for some added challenges I guess!
2) Curly - Because we get more play time.
My kids sure love their play time. They love when I give them short play breaks throughout our day. You can find them charging straight toward the lego drawer, dress up drawer, doll house, or play kitchen. We also enjoy going to the park by ourselves! No kids pushing mine down the slides and no kids climbing all over my little people. Yes, our little neighborhood park is deserted during the day! I like the play time too! Sometimes mom needs a short break! I love that they love to play together!
3) Tiger - Because I don't have to walk to school and waste my play time.
He sees school as a waste of his play time. He can only imagine if he actually had to get up, get dressed, get out the door, walk to the bus stop, and wait at school all day. So, I guess he sees homeschool as something to endure until it's play time again. Oh well, at least he never complains! It must be all about play time for my kids.
4) Curly - Because we use fun programs.
This was a shocker, seeing how she complains about spelling and math daily. Apparently she actually does enjoy science and history and loves the read alouds we choose. So, she does consider some of our school fun. Good to know!
5) Tiger - Because we do art.
Tiger loves to paint and the only way I can coax him away from play time is to promise art time. He loves pastels, chalks, pencils, water colors, and tempera paints. His pictures usually all have something to do with fighting or being a knight or dragons, but he does love to be creative. He loves the painting by Pieter Bruegel "The Hunters." He even recognizes other famous painters and can name the painter. It cracks me up every time. I love that we have the freedom to do art as often as we want!
6) Curly - Because we can dress up and do school in dress up clothes.
At our house, every day is Halloween. My kids love to create crazy outfits and do their school in dress up clothes. During this time, they are always an alter ego and I have to remember to call them by that other name. Often they have imaginary sidekicks that I have to include in our school as well. I love that they can be creative and imaginative in this way. I don't want them to grow up too fast!
7) Bee - Because I can go outside and play with Ladybug.
Some of our play breaks include outside play. I cherish the quietness of the inside and they can be loud and crazy outside. Bee especially loves to cook on the play kitchen on the patio and Ladybug loves to help her. It's so sweet to watch them cooking together.
8) Curly - Because we can put on plays and have performances.
My kids love to take what they've learned through their readings and turn them into elaborate plays. They dress up (of course) and act out scenes from our books or scenes from history. They put together little science clubs, book clubs, or writing clubs and put what they've learned into practice. They think it's all fun and games but I know it's much more than that-they are teaching each other what they've learned and are reinforcing all our lessons. They actually do listen!
9) Curly - Because we can read lots of books.
My kids love to be read to. We have so many audio books and audio stories. We have a closet full of books. We are always, always reading. When asked what subject they want to do first, they always vote for reading a book or having that book read to them. They will listen for such a long time with rapt attention to a story. Sometimes they even enjoy coloring or doing art while we read. And every week they ask me what the new read aloud will be. It's so exciting to me. I love my little book worms! I want them to be lifelong readers-even if it means I have to read Dr. Seuss and Amelia Bedelia every. single. day.
10) Bee - Because we can help each other.
This has always been one of my top reasons for homeschooling-I want my kids to develop relationships and be able to spend time together. Of course, some days they fight and I have to put everyone in a separate corner. But often they have a fun time together. Now I know that they actually do like to be together and even at age 3, Bee can appreciate the play times together and the lessons in sharing. I love that we can foster family togetherness!
As they get older, I'll have to remember to ask them this question every year. I can't wait to see how their reasons change as they grow.....
